The Downtown Kiwanis
Club of Jackson is one of the oldest Kiwanis clubs in
existence, founded in 1917. Its founding president Russell
Ward was also one of the founding fathers of Kiwanis
International. Since 1939 the club has distinguished itself
with its Shoes and Boots campaign, which raises money for
winter shoes and boots for Jackson's poor children. It is
estimated that the club has donated over $500,000 since 1939
to that project alone. Fundraisers include the annual
Newspaper Sale, the Travel and Adventure Film Series, and the
now-famous Winter Outdoor Golf Tournament.

The Downtown Kiwanis Club of Jackson
meets for lunch
at the
Cascades Manor House every Friday at
noon.

THE JACKSON DOWNTOWN
KIWANIAN
Serving the Children of
the World
April,
2008
Lydia Weeks, Editor
My term of office is halfway over. I can’t believe it. We still
have much work to do!
Many Kiwanians read once a week at McCulloch Academy of Science
and Technology during March (Reading month). The children really
enjoyed it, and they were so well behaved! I had the good
fortune to do to four different classrooms: preschool,
kindergarten, first grade and second grade. There’s lots more
fun in store with our partnership school: Continuing to read to
children, a Mileage Club in May, our joint float in the Rose
Parade June 1, and a trip to the zoo.
With the weather warming up, Herb Elfring will be looking for
volunteers to construct wheelchair ramps; the Flag Project will
be in full swing (see Lee Zimmerman to participate); and we will
have lots of other fundraising projects. See Bob Eberhart to
volunteer for the MIS races and Lee Zimmerman to grab a slot at
the Hot Air Jubilee.
Sandy Eisele also will be looking for Kiwanians to package food
on the morning of June 7
for Kids Against Hunger. Half of the 10,000
meals will stay in our county. Several of the jobs can be
done sitting down!
The Board approved a family membership, which offers a $50
reduction in membership fees for two spouses or parent-and-child
membership. That means instead of the two paying a total of
$250, they will pay $200 per year with the club picking up the
difference since most of the dues money goes to International.
So, ask your husband, wife, son or daughter to join our merry
band!
I am very happy to report that our new members are getting
involved in committees and projects! These folks joined our club
because they liked our service projects so let’s keep asking
them to participate!
Our snowbirds are starting to return so our attendance numbers
should start swelling! Spring is just such a wonderful, hopeful
season! Let’s enjoy it and share our blessings!
